Makeup Brush cleaner

Updated: Jul 22, 2023

A topic that should be discussed more often.

Makeup brush cleaning, do you take care of your brushes?

Makeup brushes over time can become so full of bacteria and lose their integrity.

I have a simple recipe that I’ve used a handful of times now, testing before publishing. They are many variations and while they all work this one is my favorite yet. Being the most efficient. I will include the variations, also.

With this cleaning method you will need to, “swish”, the brushes do not use force. You don’t want to damage them. As with ALL brushes of any kind, never use hot water either! Cold water only. Let’s get to it!

You will need:

•Two small jars or bowls

•Distilled water, boiled water (cooled), spring water, or purified water

•witch hazel

• Baby shampoo, dish soap OR

Castile soap

• Olive oil, fractionated coconut oil, or almond oil

• essential oils *not necessary

I have used lavender and I’ve used grapefruit. You would only use a drop or two

For this particular mix, I used the following ingredients and it was my absolute favorite with the best results.

•spring water

•Castile soap with lavender

•witch hazel

With Castile soap, I was able to skip the oil and the essential oils because it has both in it!

I used

1/2 C. Water in one jar, for rinsing

1/2 C. Water in the second jar, with 1 tbsp. Castile soap, and 1/2 tsp witch hazel, mixed thoroughly together

Take 1 brush at a time and swish and swirl it till clean, then rinse OR you can also swish and swirl alternating between the soap cup and rinse cup finalizing with the rinse cup. When thoroughly rinsed clean Pay dry and lay flat on a dry towel or if possible hang upside down.

*You may want to make new batches every 2 brushes or so depending on how many your doing and how dirty they are! It is amazing to watch the makeup pull right out! I’ve noticed my concealer brush and foundation brush take a little more work.

Another good recipe is as follows

1/2 cup water in one jar for rinsing

1/2 cup water, 1 Tbsp. baby soap, 1 Tbsp. Fractionated coconut oil, 1/2 tsp. Witch hazel, and 3 drops of Lavender essential oil, mixed thoroughly.

This brush is dry and soft, smells great, and is without any damage at all. The picture with the brushes standing up is the final result!
